For many of us, dancing has always been about celebration. But when you’re given a set of steps to remember, that natural flow can suddenly feel stiff and unnatural. Constantly trying to remember the steps is easily one of the most common reasons. We have complied a few hacks that can help you overcome this. Below is a beginner’s guide that actually works and is perfect for your Sangeet preparation too!

1. Soften your Knees
Don’t lock your knees, always keep them slightly bent while dancing. This gives you more room for bounce and automatically avoids the stiffness. A tiny bend lets your body act like a spring, which allows the movement to flow. Also, if your heels are glued to the floor, you’ll look rigid. Let the heels kiss the floor, don’t stomp.
2. Groove first, steps second
Instead of just trying to remember the steps and counting 1,2,34, in your head, enjoy the music and groove. Your brain can’t relax if it’s only remembering choreography.
3. Free your upper body (shoulders, arms & hands)
Robot arms scream stiffness. You have got to consciously relax your shoulders and really feel the music. Roll them back and down as you imagine the space between your ears and shoulders. This little exercise goes a long way and can loosen up your upper body.
4. Commit to full weight transfers
Stiffness comes from staying half half on both feet for too long. Try shifting 100% of your weight to one leg and so on as the step demands. This moves your centre of mass freeing the other leg or arm to swing naturally. Remember: if your torso tilts while stepping, you are compensating. Let the hips lead into weight shifting.
5. Breathe and smile
Holding your breathe triggers tension and your face mirrors that stress. Controlled breathing helps in all physical form of activities and helps you stay relaxed. You can practice inhaling on prep and exhaling through the step. While performing, don’t stare at the floor or only at your partner. Rather, smile, it instantly makes you look relaxed. Remember: Over smiling looks forced. Think “soft happy face” instead of “cheese”.
Too many steps, often compromises the groove, keep it simple, it’s a celebration not a competition. Remember, small practices go a long way!
